The Kro’s Nest has a very special Chinese name: 乌巢, It means the corbie’s nest. It’s strange because according to Chinese tradition, corbie means unlucky.

But when you get in The Kro’s Nest and see all those cute cartoon corbies on the wall, You can’t help fell in love with them immediately.

The Kro’s Nest people call themselves The Real Shit In Beijing, Because They looks not like a business guys, Oh, Yeah, They care about making great pizza…grossly humongous, yum, colorful pizza you can’t refuse.

When you are waiting for the pizza, you can play doodle for fun. There are many pages of cartoon corbies and crayons on your table, You can do anything you want with them. And post them on the wall if you like.

Feel funny? It’s more funny if you know that Doodle means in Chinese.

Oh, I think it’s a good place to visit with friends. But you’s better invite enough people to share the superior yummy!

Beijing doodle wall locates at the south road of Renmin University of China, It’s the biggest doodle wall in China. Before I had to move to a cheaper place because of the horrible rent, It was the place I often took a walk.

RenMin Renmin University of China(中国人民大学) was not far away from the house I had lived for three years. In past three years, I often had my dinner in the little restaurants of the compus and walked back home. So the Doodle Wall was so familiar with me.

The wall is only 730 meters long, and about 2.5 meters high. But there are so few doodle walls in China, and it’s the biggest one!

Half of the paintings are about Beijing’s 2008 Summer Olympic Games. But the others are very interesting, Do you think so?

Face-Changing(BianLian 变脸 in Chineses) is a kind of magic tradinational Chinese dramatic art that is know as the pride of Sichuan opera. It’s still a big secret how can they do that, But fortunately, We can enjoy Face-changing show easily in Chengdu.

Maybe you know the famous Beijing opera, But maybe you don’t know there are more than 1,300 local operas in China. Sichuan opera is one of the oldest. I also think Sichuan opera is more facetious than others.

Besides its unique solo singing, rich percussion and funny come-dians, Sichuan opera also famous by its unique skills: the face-changing, rolling lamps(滚灯) and spitting fire(吐火),

Face-changing is so magic, That you would be puzzled how they change the masks magically and so many times within a second. And they even needn’t flourish their arms and twist their heads to cover up their tracks at all!

The face-changing is considered as an important intangible cultural heritage in China. This secret has been passed down from one generation to the next within families. Only a few people have grasped this skill.

Face-changing has more than 300 years’ history. At the beginning opera actors changed the color of their face during performances by blowing into a bowl of red,black or gold powder. the powder would adhere to their oiled skin quickly. By the 1920’s,opera actors began using layers of masks, first made of oiled paper or dried pig bladder, Then silk mask. They can wear much as two-dozen layers’ masks, and pull off one by one.

Yeah, As I said, Face-Changing was traditionally performed by actors. To my surprise, I saw the girls performed Face-changing at ShunXing teahouse!

Here attached the video of face-changing I took by cell phone, It’s not so clear but you can still feel its magic! I choosed a song named “Face-changing” as the music.

ShunXing old teahouse(顺兴老茶馆) was one of my favorite places when I still lived in ChengDu many years ago. Yeah, I finally back to the internet world. Miss you so much my dear friends!
Many things happened in these four months, But I really want share you some traditional chinese paintings about Sichuan folk customs(四川民俗) first, which I found at an old tea-house of Chengdu.

JiGongChe(鸡公车)
JiGongChe is also called MuNiuLiuMa(木牛流马). It’s invented by ZhuGeLiang(诸葛亮) during the Three Kingdoms Time(三国时期). It’s a kind of very useful vehicle specially for the hilly landform of Sichuan. People use it carry all kinds of heavy things, even use it as a wedding car!
I could see JiGongChe somewhere in Sichuan when I was a little child, But you can only see them in museum now.

Sounding the night watches(打更)
In the archaic days when there were no watches, The night clock beelmen would patrol the streets at night and announce the watches. We can learn how they work from some Chinese opera.

TangYouGuoZi(糖油果子)
Looks like Tanghulu (冰糖葫芦)? No, It’s a kind of traditional snack Of Sichuan named TangYouGuoZi. It’s made from sticky rice and loved by chirdren. Yeah, It also has more than one thousands years’ history! QingShiQiao (青石桥) street of Chengdu is the most famous place to enjoy them.

Sugar painting(倒糖饼)
Chengdu Sugar Painting is a kind of important Non-Material Culture Heritage. I had tried to make it slinkingly at home and wasted a lot of sugar when I was a little girl. Yeah, It’s difficult to learn!

Tea & Long Men Zhen (喝茶&摆龙门阵)
As we know, You can find tea house everywhere in Sichuan. People there love to enjoy tea and Long Men Zhen (龙门阵) at tea house. Long Men Zhen’s original meaning was a kind of battle array which invented by a famous general named Xue Ren Gui (薛仁贵) in Tang dynasty. But Sichuan people use it to describe how dramatic the tea house chat is. Yeah, Everybody there is a great story teller!
